"We became fast friends and have never been at a loss for things to talk and laugh about!"
Jemma shares her story about how meeting up with Maria brightens up her week.
Throughout high school, I fundraised and volunteered for different charities and events. However, after the interruption brought by COVID and the onset of my university course, I began to miss volunteering and learning more about people within my local community.
I started volunteering with BSRV in March this year when, as luck would have it, I was partnered with Maria. We became fast friends and have never been at a loss for things to talk and laugh about! She has taught me so much about her culture and perspectives as a member of the vision-impaired community. I always enjoy getting to know more about her and her experiences. Being able to meet up with Maria is easily one of the best things about my week.
On the warmer days, we head outside and go for a walk to the local shops, around the block or up to a local park. Sometimes we even stop in for a coffee at a local café so we can do even more chatting! On the cooler days, however, we stay at Maria’s house and enjoy a nice cup of tea.
Alongside getting out for a walk I think it has been good for Maria to have someone to talk with regularly outside of her family. Aside from our regular conversations, while out and about Maria has also had the chance to talk with some acquaintances. I hope I’ve helped Maria have a brighter week as she does for me!
Walking with Willpower -
The Walking with Willpower program promotes fitness, wellbeing and community involvement by matching adults who have low or no vision with a trained, friendly volunteer in their local area to share together the benefits of walking. Many great friendships have been developed through this program.
We love to welcome new volunteers and participants. Please get in contact and then join us and join in.
