Applications now open for BSRV's Regional Volunteer Ambassador Program. Join us.

Join us as a BSRV Regional Volunteer Ambassador and join in!

Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria has delivered an Award winning Volunteer Ambassador Program for 3 years.
We are now expanding our Volunteer Ambassador Program into the regional areas of Geelong / Surf Coast and Wangaratta / Shepparton and surrounding areas.

We are currently inviting expressions of interest and will then interview and nominate 5 Volunteer Ambassadors.

We will provide training and support to all Ambassadors and there will be opportunities for peer mentoring with other Ambassadors in the program.

As a Volunteer Ambassador for Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria (BSRV), you will share about BSRV programs at public events and activities and encourage people to engage in sport and recreation as a participant, or volunteer. We ask that you present yourself in alignment with our organisational values. These values are: inclusion, leadership, participation, collaboration, respect and human rights.

You will be supported by BSRV in different roles: raising awareness, educating, and inspiring others to get involved in blind sport and recreation, volunteering or as a supporter. While you are promoting BSRV programs, we encourage you to speak about your own experience with sport and recreation in a respectful and inclusive manner.

The role of BSRV Ambassadors:

There are many different ways you may be asked to represent BSRV in the community as a Volunteer Ambassador. These include:

  • Delivering talks/presentations to a variety of groups, for example schools, community groups, sporting clubs, charities, government
  • Assisting with Vision Loss Awareness Training sessions
  • Being a leader in your local community
  • Attending expos and exhibitions, helping with information stalls and providing information to the public
  • Helping with fundraising activities and promotional events
  • Taking part in media interviews
  • Contributing to articles for blogs, websites, newsletters.
  • Offering peer support to other BSRV members

Within these opportunities, you will have the opportunity to share your own experience of being blind or vision impaired, whilst reinforcing the mission and vision of BSRV and sharing about our programs and how to get involved.

Who can Apply?

We are looking for adults with vision loss or blindness who live in or near the following locations:
Geelong and Surf Coast Shires and Shepparton and Wangaratta Shires and surrounding regional areas

How to Apply:

Expressions of interest are open between 6th February and 28th February 2025.
Please email BSRV Program Manager Rachel DeSumma rachel@blindsports.org.au with your answers to these two questions:

  • How will being an Ambassador support your goals / interests?
  • What skills and interests will you bring to the role?

BSRV staff will be able to assist you in preparing your Expression of Interest if you would prefer to dictate over the phone or have any questions about the program please call Rachel on 0493 105 800.

The process:

We will follow up with those who express an interest within 2 weeks of the closing date of applications. We will select a number of people to interview and invite successful applicants to join the program for a 1 year term. Once you are accepted into the role, you will need to apply for a Working with Children card, complete a police check and comply with our organisational policies.

What support will you receive?

BSRV will provide guidance and support for those who proceed through the training to become Ambassadors. The process involves attending an induction, which will cover information about BSRV, its programs, core values and volunteer opportunities; as well as presentation information. You will also be introduced to a contact person who will support you along the journey, whom you can contact if you have any questions. BSRV will organise the logistics of events, communicating with you where and when events are, as well as your role at the event, the context of the event and a main contact person on the day. Please organise with us before the event if you anticipate any transport costs so we can confirm with you that we can reimburse you for your travel expenses.

What are the benefits of being an Ambassador?

The Ambassador role will be a flexible role where you will be made aware of upcoming opportunities and then can choose to attend the ones that suit your availability. We want to work with you so that you develop new skills and strengthen existing ones through the program.  This might include leadership skills, building your confidence, public speaking skills and networking.

You will have the opportunity to attend a range of events, or share your story on a range of platforms throughout the experience. You will have the opportunity to connect with and engage with different groups, communities and activities.

This is a volunteer role, and you will be reimbursed for pre-approved out-of-pocket costs (e.g. transport costs).
