On Sunday the 27th of November, 2022, Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria were invited to attend the Vision Australia Family Fete at the Kooyong office in Melbourne.
Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria's Program Manager, Miriam Bilander, set up a stall with information posters and modified sports equipment, so that kids with vision loss and their parents could learn more about the exciting options available to them.
One parent exclaimed, “My NDIS has been cut off and now I don’t have any therapists visiting my five year old son. We live in Sunshine and cannot afford to come to Kooyong all the time. It is so good to know that you run free school holiday programs, I am so happy”.
Also in attendance was Brooke Carter, President of the Victorian Goalball Association, and her team of volunteers, and the energetic Victorian Blind Cricket Association player, Dan Pritchard. Both Brooke and Dan did a fantastic job of running goalball and cricket activities for kids attending the fete.
As well as experiencing blind sports, children and young people had the opportunity to meet professional AFL footballer, Tom Mitchell, have photos taken with Santa, pat two adorable guide dog puppies, climb abord a fire engine, eat some yummy sausages and listen to a choir singing Christmas carols. Possibly the highlight for some families was watching channel nine’s six o’clock news and seeing their little ones front and centre!
