“Parkrun” has grown into an international phenomenon with over 9 million people participating in this weekly volunteer-led fun run in local parks across the world. Their core principle is simple – “weekly, free, for everyone, forever!”.
On Saturday the 16th of November, 2024, Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria organised for a group of seven people with vision loss to participate in the Parkville Parkrun – a 5 km flat loop of the beautiful Princes Park.
Some participants came across from BSRV’s affiliated running club, Achilles, and were familiar with the Parkrun concept, while others had never heard of it and had no idea that three hundred people would gather on the start line with them.
It was a hot thirty four degree day, but at 8am in the morning and shaded by huge Oak trees, it turned out to be a perfect day for a walk or run.
Thanks to volunteers, John, Uy, Rhiannon, Liz and Blake, everyone was supported to meaningfully participate in a way that suited individual fitness levels. After the event, the group headed to the Parkside Café for a rewarding coffee, blueberry muffin and social catch-up.
This event was made possible thanks to the support of the City of Melbourne.
